TCP experts - improving dial-up performance?

Hi All, Yeah, so I have dial-up. Stop laughing. :) I would like some advice on making the best of my slow dial-up connection. The behavour I observe when downloading files (http get and ftp both) is: a) Download holds steady for some seconds, say about 30 b) Rate stumbles, falling to zero for a few seconds c) Rate shoots up to 4 or five times nominal d) Rate declines back to nominal over a few seconds e) repeat from a) A wireshark capture, if I am interpreting correctly, reveals that the window ( this is the TCP congestion window cgwnd?) increases during (a), whereupon at (b) a segment or two gets dropped, dup ACKS and retransmissions ensue (some which seem to me to be unnecessary), the window is shortened, progress resumes as normal for awhile, then the whole cycle repeats. So I imagine that packets from the high-speed sender are piling up somewhere in the path until eventually a buffer gets exceeded and a packet gets dropped. Am I reading the situation correctly? Is there any way I encourage the other end of the link to throttle back? Thanks for any comments and education. And really, stop laughing! -Shawn

On the "flash is just a bad format" thread: I do note that my DirecTV DVR manages to play YouTube videos full screen without stalling and jerking. Obviously dedicated decoding hardware, the CPU is pretty low-power.

Patch Panels & Rack Stuff

This is all standard 19" computer rack stuff. All new, never mounted, left over from an over-estimated project. Comparable new prices: 4 ea. 2U 48 port Cat5 patch panel - $50 $200 8 ea. 2U Cable Management Panel - $30 $240 1 ea. 1U 6 outlet power strip - $60 (!) $ 60 ==== $500 A few guys expressed interest - here's the deal: Make me an offer. Minimum bid is you come get it. Trade items considered, Belgian or St. Pauli beer a possibility. Best offer gets it. (If you don't want all of it, take it all and re-post or go in with someone.) Need to get this out of the way of a plumbing project, so time is a factor.

I am getting in to this a little late but I hope to encourage you to have your friend try out... http://vinuxproject.org/ Which runs on a live CD so your friend could try it without changing the current setup till she determines if it is acceptable. Also I found http://the-brannons.com/edbrowse/philosophy.html which describes a project by a blind programmer. I do not know if 'edbrowse' comes on the live CD or not. I talked off-mike with our blind interviewer/member and recall that he said he preferred Linux because the GUI was only run when he needed it. Most times he could do everything he wanted at the command line. Unix, and now Linux, were designed to be able to tie programs together to accomplish things their author never dreamed they could be used for. That is why we get things like 'dradio'... DRadio is a Danmarks Radio netradio, podcast, and TV player. It is a terminal based frontend to MPlayer that collects the available channels/podcasts for convenient browsing. http://www.thrysoee.dk/dradio/ Such combinations abound in the non-Windows world.

The Going Linux podcast has some good resources for blind users. In episode 117, they interview a blind linux user who builds and sells systems. He discusses his system setup and additional resources. I was recently referred to a skills testing site, proveit.com. They have a number of Linux skills tests available - all of which can only be taken in Internet Explorer running on Windows. It occurs to me that yes, there is a world where all the admins run Windows and manage their Linux systems and servers with putty, or more likely vnc or a web interface. I'm sure this is more common in the "enterprise" Linux world than in my experience. Besides the tests working only in Windows, they say that they were tested in Firefox 2.0 and IE6 - the latter being a notorious security hole that Microsoft has struggled in vain to get rid of. Anyway, just so you know, anybody citing proveit.com testing as evidence of Linux knowledge is pulling your leg.
