DOS prevention

I have a CentOS web server that has recently been brought to a halt on two separate occasions. Checking the access.log, it appears that it was a Denial of Service (DOS) attack (hundreds of HTTP requests in a very short time, all from a single IP address). I want to prevent these types of attacks from bringing the server to its knees. We have a hardware firewall (SonicWall) in place, but it isn't quite new enough to run the firmware that allows rate-limiting. I have found a number of tutorials that show how to do this type of thing with IPTABLES. Is there a better solution? Supposing I go with IPTABLES, do I need to include rules to allow FTP and SSH (the only other services on the server)? Would any of you be willing to assist me with this? Hi Mike, Have you checked around Lawrence? I know back around 7 years ago, there was a group of KU students (20+ at times) that would meet up once in a while for a linux meetup. Though it was on the KU campus, it wasnt limited to just KU students. This doesnt quite answer your original question, but Lawrence is right around the corner from Topeka and might be a lot easier for you to travel to. I cant find a web page on this meetup, but maybe one of these guys in this group could help you. http://www.ittc.ku.edu/kurt/ (KUSP: Kernel/User Systems Programming). invite to topeka for technical talks and workshops

Hi all, have resubscribed using a new mail to free up my gmail from mailing lists. we have moved to topeka and am now working on linux systems at payless here. In my free time I am working on promoting open source software and open knowlege. We dont have a car by choice, so my transportation is limited to public transportation which is almost non existent here in topeka, there is only one train to KC at 5am in the morning. There are many user groups in KC like java user groups and groups in lawrence, but it is very hard to find people to go there with me who have cars. have been attending the http://www.adastralabs.org/ meetings on thursday and we discussed there the options of making bigger events. So, we would like invite speakers from the list to come to topeka to hold talks and workshops, is possible we would create an event here at the library, university or at some office (like pc911), Ideally we would have 2-3 advance notice and would promote the event locally. For travel expenses we will have to discuss this topic, we will look at fundraising to cover travel costs. Tradebot Systems (where I work now) is looking to expand. We are hiring a software developer and a sysadmin for the operations team (where I work). Since I last posted this, we've filled most spots. All that's left is a developer position for someone that's strong in C++ and a junior/mid-level Linux sysadmin position. Note that most of the company is very technically savvy, and requests for help are pretty high level. This will be about 10% of the job. (This part of the job will probably not be a primary responsibility - we hired someone three weeks ago who will have this as their focus) * Junior level system administration of Linux servers and a few Windows servers. Our company is about 90% Linux, only the backoffice and a few legacy systems run Windows still. This is a great opportunity for someone with Windows experience and just limited Linux experience to move into the future. This will be a large part of the job. * Build and manage physical servers, including some limited datacenter work. Windows RAID backup via System Rescue CD, et al

I have a problem. A Windows server had a hardware failure on a controller. We are currently building an identical server to replace it (not my decision). A certain part of the system doesn't have a current backup (namely my code, plus other things). (I have backups of my code, but there are things important to my code that weren't backed up at the time of the crash.) The server uses a RAID configuration. I don't have the details, not my department, this is a client's machine. I can get them if it helps in giving an answer. We believe the drives are fine. (Although I have my doubts as to the integrity of the data.) I've use Trinity Rescue kit to salvage NTFS drives and partitions without problem. Can System Rescue CD or any of the Linux rescue distros back up a Windows RAID configuration of drives? My assumption is as long as you define the RAID configuration correctly it should be just like any other backup in Linux? Thanks, Jack D
