Charity needs help selling off computer equipment

I don't like spam, and I'm only mentioning this because many of you may benefit from it. The Community and Senior Service Center at 67th & Nieman Rd. (behind StoneBridge Wines & Fine Foods) in Lenexa, KS, gets a lot of donated computer hardware. I volunteer my time there testing most of the equipment they get, so I know most of what they have works. Everything I test gets a price label with information as to whether or not it works and how well it works. Anyway, they don't have a lot of space to store anything, and they have quite a lot of computer equipment which needs to go to people who need it. If any of you need things like monitors and keyboards, you should come by and check them out. Due to the lack of space most are priced to sell quickly. Used Monitors 14" and 15" go for $10 usually, sometimes a little higher but most of them are $10 right now. Used Keyboards, AT & PS/2, go for $3 each. Used Inkjet printers are $10. We're pricing all the miscellaneous cables, power, printer, whatever, at $1 each for a few more weeks. And for those of you wanting to do a little extremely low end experimenting, there are some 386 and 486 machines lying around for $3-$5 each (if nothing else, consider them a $3 used floppy drive). There's even one used Pentium 100Mhz with a CDROM! (ooooo!) Don't mind the duct tape on the cases, its crude security to keep the folks who open cases from stealing the RAM, CDROM drive, floppy drive, etc., then closing the case and walking away. Had two computers which were rendered nearly useless from that last week. So come on down, buy some hardware. All the food is free (1 sweet item per person) and sometimes they have fresh vegetables too. _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? This lineage of humor has more grounding in objective realities than INDUCE does. The public perception sees Linspire, and the criminal aspects addressed by the misbegotten legislative FUD, as all one lump. Result being that, anti-copying/sharing legislation gets more good press than Buckaroo Banzai did. Hell folks, the logic used to assault our freedoms in ANY aspect of our mundane lives has begun to resemble the eighth dimension more than not. Sadly the unfunny part is that shite like INDUCE detracts from Linux as yet more FUD tarnishes Open Source. Every time another un-refuted salvo of FUD slimes Linux, and by extension all Open Source, it hurts our common cause. Nope, that won't work for KCLUG mail. The "To:" field will not always, in fact hardly ever, have the proper recipient of the email. Hence, Matt's dilemma. You have to look at the crazy headers for KCLUG. I'd say he needs both of the approaches you stated. One filter by list and to by "To:". That *should* get most if not all filtered into his appropriate mailboxes. Bittorrent

A resent question here brings up something that's bugged me too. Bittorrent is a great concept. It's community supported, and for files the size of installation iso's it's a better way to download. So why hasn't it replaced ftp completely? Because bittorrent doesn't work. When it does work, it works great. It works so well and it's such a great idea that people for whom it works often abandon conventional means of distributing files, leaving their projects completely in limbo if the torrents dry up, or if one of the many other overriding reasons bittorrent doesn't work should take them down. I don't want to get into a language war here. I know that there can be no growth without change. Part of the problem with bittorrent is that it's written in python, and python is an evolving language, so depending on what platform you're on, you may or may not have access ot a version of python that will run bittorrent. (I don't.) Although bittorrent pierces firewalls pretty well, it's not clear that it does as well outbound as inbound. This appears to stall the process in some cases, as you are expected to share your resources if you're going to participate in a torrent . The other problem, and one that I think has probably been what kept me from persuing bittorrent further, is that there are a lot of bad links to bad torrents out there - streams that won't launch, won't connect, for whatever reason. So the problem is that if you have a project that has "discovered" bittorrent, but has yet to discover all the potential problems it has, you end up with a project that's inaccessible to a large portion of it's potential audience. The standard OSS community response is to blame the users, and belittle their skills and knowledge because they can't get bittorrent to run. If anybody's listening, I have another idea. The traditional protocol for distributing software on the internet still works just fine. For a bittorrent project, it makes a great backup, and ensures that future torrents can be launched, even if there's a problem that takes down the original links. </rant>

[OT?] Trivia tidbit. The Bat! is the *only* email client I've ever seen used by Russians and Ukrainians. I'm sure there are other email clients used by Russians and other former Eastern Bloc countries, but I haven't "met" those people. And to bring it back on to a Linux topic, I didn't see a lot of Linux used in Ukraine, but that may be because, Windows is for sale at pennies on the dollar over there. Not that I'm recommending such a purchase, but if a person were to need to buy several hundred dollars of Windows software, a trip to Ukraine would pay for itself. OT: ogg file blind, listening test

Since someone here has just mentioned .ogg files I was wondering what encoding rate I need to use so that I cannot distinguish my .ogg file from my cd. A couple years back I read about a double-blind (maybe just single blind) study with 256kbit constant bitrate mp3's. The listeners, who were described to have excellent ears, could not distinguish the mp3's from the cd's, though a computer could. I don't care what a computer can distinguish. I have searched the net several times and found no similar study with .ogg files. Aren't there any people who have done a blind study with .ogg files? I want to know the minimum quality settings I can use with .ogg in order to save hd space. I have about 120gb 256kb mp3 music. According to my preliminary research I think I can save at least 30% space. Thanks, Jeff
