Does K/Ubuntu use apt-pinning? Does this interfere or limit what packages you install to them? I may have run into a similar problem that Jhutchins had with his Gentoo and the Wacom crap the other day. I try to remove some package from Mepis that I will never use. E.g. Gtkpod for ipod support, and a whole crap load of stuff is going to be removed by apt-get. Makes it hard to gain space my removing what you don't need. Or do a apt-get update and upgrade and a whole slew of stuff stops working right.

It works because that is the main (only ?) method of package distribution for Fedora. The built in package manager is Yum, or are you refering to the little GUI tool that allows you uninstall/install things that are on the CD media. The title of the window it brings up is a tad deceiving, the only packages that manages are what come from the install media. The result of using both are wholly predictable: no problem. Ubuntu and Kubuntu vs. Mepis

Who in our group is actually using these distros? I'm interested in the ease of updating and stability after doing so compared to Mepis, HDD installed Knoppix and regular Debian or any other Debian-based distro. I've tried tons of LiveCDs, used Mepis quite a bit and never had success with plain old Debian installing as a desktop. I like Mepis out of the box, though like any distro you find little bits that don't work or you don't like. Mepis is switching to the Ubuntu repositories with the next release, in order to get more stable updates. The point of this is, I still consider myself a Mepis user, but I'm concerned about the quality of the Ubuntu repos if I stick with it. Also, if I were to switch to Kubuntu, will I run into apt-pin problems when I try to add software not included on the distro disks? That has been a problem on Mepis with the Debian unstable repos. I tried the 64-bit Kubuntu last week and it looks great on my newish desktop PC, but I also wonder how it will do on a PIII-500 with lots of ram. An older Mepis was OK on it after I turned off the flashing and bouncing mouse-busy cursors. Haven't had the guts to try a newer Mepis or anything else on that PC. I need a Linux with the games working for my kids when they are over.

Whatever you do, do not install XP Home volunteerily. Possibly one of the commercial Linux distros will have the level of ease of use a and multimedia you desire. But to be quite frank, the only thing I have found lacking in an properly configured/setup Fedora Core is midi support. And maybe I just didn't give it much attention (had no real need for it) _ As a boy I jumped through Windows, as a man I play with Penguins.

Laptop for Church - Which Distro

I recently got my employer to donate a laptop to my church. However, our policy is to wipe the hard drives of all computers and laptop before they leave the firm. So, I need an operating system (Linux of course comes to mind first). However, at church we want to use this as our multi-media laptop hooked up to a projector during worship. So it needs good sound and video. I'm partial to Fedora Core (and version 5 was released a few days ago), but it can be limiting when it comes to mainstream multimedia. I got six replies and I wrote back basically the same to all of you. Everyone knows that the Helpdesk is not the greatest gig, but it is always a foot in the door or the start of some experience. I hear about jobs through recruiters and friends all the time. I try to keep the group informed whenever something comes up that is promising. All, Thank you for the information. I have been doing a lot of reading, and its starting to come together. I did finally get something working, kind of. Below is the modeline that I finally ended up using. (via alot of trail and error) The color is fine, but there is a lot of over scan. Modeline "1280x720" 75.27 1280 1312 1592 1624 720 735 742 757 No level of tweaking, got rid of the over scan. I finally decided to use the --geometry setting for mythfrontend (instructing the application to only use part of the screen, the visible part) I have a feeling that the note in the manual about not using the monitor with a PC was CYA by Toshiba. If anyone has suggestions to get rid of the over scan, I am listening. (A 12 pack of Boulevard to the person with the answer that works.) Job opening - helpdesk

I just got a contact on some helldesk, err... helpdesk opening that pays around 16/hr. If interested, email me and I'll send the contact info. rather than spamming the list with some recruiter info. And as always, my boss is looking for a Jr. Tech. He is interviewing today 12-2 and I imagine that job will open up again in a couple of months max. Not a great job, but a foot in the door and some experience for the old resume for you recent grads and career transitioners. Send me a resume if interested in that and I'll pass it on. He holds on to resumes until the next opening if he decides on somebody.
