Linux question, GUI "lightweight" text editors

For those out there familiar with UltraEdit in Windows, I have a questioon. Is there a single Linux Editor that has most if not all the features of UltraEdit? For those that use Windows and don't use UltraEdit, you're missing out on the BEST Windows Editor there is. Partial list of functions: column or line text selection/editing, search with regular expressions, display/edit in hex, search in a directory tree for a string returning all lines found with filename and line number and line of text, replace in a directory tree a string, use special keystrokes in above two features to search and or replace or add nonprinting characters (e.g. newline), syntax highlighting, custom syntax definitions, word count, file position display (line and column), macros, line sorting, data conversion (e.g. ASCII -> EBCDIC), etc. There are a lot more features, but I rarely use more than this. This seems like something relatively easy to do in Linux, as all the basic tools seem to be available in any distro, but I can't say I've seen any editor with all of them. UltraEdit is $20 btw, and well worth it. It's paid for itself for me many times over. I couldn't tell you how many hours of work it has saved me. In fact it paid for itself the first time I ever used it. I'd pay $20 for a Linux solution that did all this. I'd probably pay even more than $20 for it. Like I said, it looks easy, but not necessarily quick to build. I'm sure I could build one, if I had a few hundred hours of spare time. Brian JD

Blocked Web Server and Squid Question

Good afternoon everyone and happy Friday! :) A quick update on the Ubuntu install on the laptop for my church - that worked great but we experienced a hardware failure in the laptop last Sunday so that sort of took the wind out of our sails. :( I have a different sort of problem and it's beyond my expertise because I'm a infant when it comes to networks, NATs, TCPIP, etc. So, here goes. First, a survey. What happens when you go to this URL: http://sharing.lansingumc.org Do you see a login screen? More and more of my church members are getting blocked somewhere, by their employers and in some cases the military, I suspect because I'm doing a port forward through my router on port 81 to the webserver behind the router. I have two webservers at home, the church server (port forward to 81) and my own personal webserver (the normal HTTP port of 80 is forwarded to it). If it's being blocked because of port 81, should I just switch them? Or should I use Squid on my personal webserver to somehow do the forwarding from my webserver to the church webserver, all on port 80? (This is where I need help because I've tried reading the Squid documentation and my mind just starts to wonder and get lost). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will even go so far as to allow someone (briefly) access via my SSH tunnel (if you provide your IP address so I can add it to hosts.allow). We have TextPad avail. at work. It seems to do more than Notepad and more geared to programming, config files and crap I do than Word (to your mother). Why don't you start by telling us which editors you've tried, that don't fit the bill. Make it a list and save us the multiplicity of emails that say, "you can do all this with vi/vim/emacs/gedit/kate/beaver/Ted/kedit." Yes, I said Beaver. Debian Live Net

So, since it's been a week since anyone has posted and I have nothing better to talk about, I thought I would promote some work I just commited to the Debian Live project. Currently on a Debian system, one can install the live-package package and run "make-live iso" to generate a Knoppix-like Live CD with your own custom software selection. I added support for booting the live environment from a Samba share. One runs "make-live net" and a chroot environment is configured. After configuring a dhcp3 server, tftp server and Samba, one can boot any computer with 128 MB of RAM directly in to the live environment -- it all runs off the server in read-only mode. Changes are lost just like when running a Live CD. My earlier attachments didn't show up in the archives. The company that I work for will be subsequently distributing "finished" configurations: tarballs of the chroot environment. One will be an "open source edition" with no installer or management tools and the other will be an "enterprise edition" with the afore-mentioned tools and also the ability to run Windows 98, 2000 or XP inside of a virtualizer on the thin clients. The installer and management tools are written in C# and run on the Mono runtime environment. The virtualizer can be QEMU 0.8.1 or VMware Player 1.0. They can be configured to run full-screen so that end users have no idea that they are running Windows on Linux on a thin client.
