Craig has a problem with getting an Orinoco usb wifi unit to be seen by Ubuntu 6.06. Any suggestions?

My Collie Zaurus SL-5500 is starting to flake out. It died/corrupted itself a while back. When I reflashed it with Hentges, its root partition was corrupted again before the week was out. I'm going to try removing its newer OS and reverting to a circa 2004 openzaurus distribution, since all I really need are madplay, a functioning terminal, and JustReader. I really hate the way these new versions of OpenZaurus et al have gotten so bloated that they need to bleed off into the CF/SD cards for basic Qtopia/OPIE system files. I've seen the PalmOS devices that Tom Bruno and Chris Bier carry around, but the eBook readers on both seem far less functional than JustReader, and the situation seemed to be even worse for PocketPC/WinCE owners when I was trying to hook my dad up with part of my eBook collection in '04-'05. Software issues aside, I've also never seen anything with a screen as large as a Zaurus, although it's been a while since I was really in the market. Short of hitting the lottery I'm not going to be able to afford a Zaurus SL-6000, and they're discontinued anyway. What's a poor boy to do when all he wants is something to play MP3s and read eBooks on? Is there anything on the market that'll run Qtopia/OPIE-based Linux distributions well? Thanks, Sean Crago

Another giveaway - no stories or noble causes required this time; just be the first one to say "Yeah, I'll take that!" and it's yours. Up for grabs: Two 512mb sticks (1gb total) of laptop RAM. Used but fully functional, and pulled from my Vaio VGN-A690 as part of an upgrade. (Helloooo, 2GB of RAM me!) This is Sony's originally installed RAM, so I don't know the manufacturer. Specs from Sony are: 533mhz DDRII SDRAM, PC2-4200. One stick or both, it's up to you. Smartphone w/ Linux?

Does anyone have a smartphone/PDA that works well with Linux? The only ones that I really know of are the Treo's, and Palm OS is getting a little long in the tooth. If you have a success story or recommendation of a phone let me know! -- Kyle Sexton

Indexing home videos

Does anyone know of an existing system for indexing home videos? I could throw together a small db and set up some frontend for searching and entering videos but if there is something out there it would save me time. I plan on converting the raw dv to dvd, burning a copy and also keeping a copy on disk. A way of naming and then searching them for content would be really nice. Thanks, Brad

I found out that SyncML would probably work on my phone, but Sprint seems to be blocking it. Try https://zyb.com/ for online sync. Looks like with SyncML and services like www.scheduleworld.com <http://www.scheduleworld.com/> you can pretty much sync any phone OTA. In addition there are Evolution plug-ins for SyncML. :) -- Kyle Sexton

Hey look, Debian 4.0 is out...

http://www.debian.org/News/2007/20070408 I'm sure the Debian fans around here noticed, but for those not watching for it it's now official. It's a tad late from the projected Apr. 2 release. At least at this rate their release schedule should inspire fewer jokes... I have run Testing as recently as 2 weeks ago, and what I saw was pretty nice. I may wipe the Ubuntu 7.04 beta on my P4 and give this final Debian 4.0 release a go again. Jon.
