Upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10 or wait a bit?

My system updater is bugging me to upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10. I'm interested in all the KCLUG "early adopters" experiences and whether anyone has experienced any problems with upgrading to 7.10. I generally prefer the newer versions of Ubuntu and rarely have had any problems with new versions, but a lifetime of using Microsoft products has left me with a feeling of dread about any new version of software. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Messing around with my network on Linux (looking for noob stuff, not complicated networking things that make my brain cry)

First of all, today, I had a comcast tech come by. He was incredibly unsuited to working with computers (he had to hunt and peck to type...), so unsurprisingly he had absolutely no idea what Linux was. He radioed for help, and the response was "uh.. linux is like... a software". Luckily, my mom's work box runs XP, but I'd like to be somewhat more informed in the future, plus have some fun. I googled for an equivalent of ipconfig /release and /renew, and got ifconfig up/down <device>, but it sounded like this was for that device, and that I had to do something else for the router. So my question is, how would I do this for the router? (Netgear, not in the mood to check the model right now so just let me know if you need that info) I've also been screwing around with ping and found a couple computers on my network where I'm unsure of what they are. One, is there a way to tell all of the devices on my local network? The "Attached Devices" page on my router doesn't show anything-- not even my physically-connected-to-the-damn-thing-by-a-cable computer. Two, is there a way to tell what a device is with it's IP address? Like have it report some information about itself? I'm running (a bastardized) Ubuntu 7.04, if that matters. I'd also be interested in any other fun easy-to-do LAN things. I'm easily amused, I still get giddy whenever I ssh to my main box from a laptop and open a text file in nano, so there has to be other fun things to do...

I've used DSL from Telocity and then DirectTV when they bought them. Switched to SBC when DirectTV pulled out of DSL. I'm now on AT&T's DSL since they bought SBC. They have a $25 a month service at 3M download. I've been running a personal web server on all of them without problems. Note: AT&T (SBC) will block port 25 unless you tell them to stop it. Comcast has recently been found killing P2P traffic.

Novell coupons and McDonald's gift certificates

This is a no-win situation for FOSS, because even trying to make the argument feeds into the "GPL is VIRAL!!!111oneoneone" meme. If we lose, we look stupid, but if we win, it confirms the meme.

FOSS Solutions

Obviously, this could start (and has started) plenty of religious flame wars over the years. This is not my intention. I am wondering what points I can use, specifically, as arguments to make a case for FOSS, specifically Linux, in a business setting. If I were hired as the IT director of a small company, and was asked to build an IT Director of a small company, my inclination would be to begin building with Linux and FOSS, but when my boss came to me and asked me why I chose those technologies, honestly I would have very few concrete reasons. Here is what I have so far: 1. I agree with the philosophy behind FOSS 2. There are a plethora of plug-ins developed to help extend our infrastructure for our current (and future) needs 3. If we find that a piece of software we downloaded (or purchased) is broken, or doesn't do what we need it to do, we have the source code and (hopefully) the resources to fix/change it. 4. Not only are there several (competing) options for paid support, there are a ton of free message boards, mailing lists and IRC channels to get assistance from, making our virtual knowledge bank HUGE 5. Total cost of ownership is going to be a fraction of that of closed source products. 6. When needed, we can find closed source software to do what we need when we can't find a FOSS solution That's where I am at. I am a programmer and know only the basics of networking, so the networking possibilities within FOSS elude me. Of course, it's always most important to use the most appropriate tool for the job, but I would give preference to FOSS tools over proprietary tools. Again, my intention is not to start arguments, only to pull together reasons why FOSS is a credible business alternative to proprietary software solutions.
