Router Problem

Well, now back to my original problem. I have two run of the mill routers. I have a LinkSys WRT54G router/WAP that is connected to the cable modem. My shop building is too far away (120+ft) from the Linksys to make an effective wireless connection out here, but I have ethernet running from the Linksys to the shop building. Restating the case for keeping "User Data" on a physically separate drive or drives

I have been gently suggesting a new practice. Making it routine to keep the Non-OS data on a separate drive from the OS. Bluntly stating the two bedrock facts seems belaboring the obvious. But the percent of such default installs is trivial at best. So? I invite constructive comment on why or why NOT using a separate device for OS and user data makes any sense. I have recently built up a new computer and loaded it with a Canonical disc of Ubuntu 8.10, so far, so good. I like the OS and the upgrade from 7.10 was worth it. Until this morning.... I got the lit icon, checked the list of updates, shut down all other open programs and started the process. Downloaded 23 or 26 updates, among them a new linux kernel and its associated stuff, download proceeded smoothly and, at the end, required a system restart. Router Problem

NCR lead and 3 workers will swap POS gear @ Kirksville MO Wal-Mart. 9pm Monday the 19th to 5 or so am Tues the 20th. So far it"s that lead, Me ,and Craig from the campground. UUIDs missing in Ubuntu?

I recently did a benign looking apt-get dist-upgrade in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex and, a few days later, rebooted. I think a kernel patch was involved, but I'm not sure/haven't tried to revert to an old one yet to fix this problem, but I'd like to find a cleaner fix: I have one old PATA HDD on my box that I mount on boot to /tmp via a UUID-based fstab entry.
