"Attempted" Copyright Infringement may be illegal soon.

Proposed Crime of the Century: Attempted Copyright Infringement http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/2007/05/ippa07 Back in May 2007 Attorney General Alberto Gonzales suggested a new bill that would make "attempted copyright infringement" a crime, punishable by up to life in prison. He would need a sponsor in the House or Senate to make Congress consider it, and I don't know if anyone has agreed to sponsor it yet. This is a really scary law, considering how many currently innocuous activities (such as having a spindle of blank CDs next to your computer) could be made into serious criminal offenses. VMWare was not a solution because I'd still have to run out and buy a copy of Windows XP to run on top of Linux in VMWare. More likely these days I'd have to buy Vista instead, and then there's the learning curve of figuring out how to install and use Vista on top of taking the test. WINE might have been a solution except that I was dealing with some sort of proprietary Windows solution. Usually with WINE you have some sort of indication from the WINE folks or from message boards whether or not a given application will run in WINE (IE, Microsoft Office, Morrowind, etc.) and that wasn't the case. --- Joe Brouhard <jbrouhard(a)gmail.com> wrote: > When all else fails.. No Linux for Online Job Testing

So I'm between jobs and I get a call from a staffing agency about a tech support helpdesk job. It sounds all right, pays reasonably well and it is on the Kansas side so the taxes are easy. It also turns out that the guy who will decide whether or not I get hired is an old acquaintance of mine from college who remembers me as really tall and a good computer guy. The staffing agency informs me that in order to make sure I get the job I'm going to have to take some basic tests, a "phone etiquette" test a stunned badger could pass, and a 10-key typing test. They send me the information and I get on the testing website. Then it turns out that the testing website, for some reason, uses some sort of proprietary Windows web software to do all its testing. IE isn't the problem because FireFox on Windows is supported. Since I went all-Linux a few months ago, I didn't have any way to take the test myself on any of my own computers. I finally had to convince my wife to stop playing Morrowind for an hour (not an easy task) so I could use her Windows PC. I suppose the thing I find irritating about this is that industry leaders (excepting Microsoft, of course) use platform independent testing software. Cisco in particular used testing software on its Academy website which worked great for me in Firefox on Debian Linux. Is it really that much more cost-effective to use Windows-dependent testing software on a website? ____________________________________________________________________________________ Park yourself in front of a world of choices in alternative vehicles. If you have access to one, I would also want to try their software/site, on a Mac. Too many people don't get why standards, are !

FOR SALE: Several computer parts and servers

I'm in the process of getting rid of a large majority of the computers/parts I do have laying around. Here we go: 1) Dell PowerEdge 6450 Quad Xeon 900Mhz, 8GB RAM, 2x 18GB SCSI Drives (it has 4 drive bays, so there are 2 with no drives). This system is known working and I have successfully installed linux on it in the past. Tho you gotta go the boot floppy method, as for some reason, liveCDs don't install linux on it (it only installed Windows off the CD for some odd reason). This is a really sweet box if you are looking to do builds or even major hosting. 2) 2x AMD Athlon 1400+ machines. Both 1GB RAM. However, one system has onboard NIC and Video, and I'm pretty sure the other system doesn't. One machine comes with an ATI Radeon 7200 128MB AGP card, 60GB Hard Drive, CD-RW. second machine (build in video and NIC) comes with 40GB Drive and CD-ROM. 3) Pentium II 400Mhz machine w/ SCSI Controller and 18GB SCSI Drive. 512MB PC100 RAM installed. I can deliver all these machines to KC metro area as well as Omaha, NE. However anything outside 2 hours of driving time will require me to ship it. Shipping on the PowerEdge is upwards $100 or more.
